Doctor Who: Wish World

Rating: 4 out of 10.

I’m sure when the other half of this episode comes out, my opinion on the 2 part story will be vastly different than that of my opinion on this episode as it currently stands on its own. Unfortunately for today, it stands on its own, and I have liked this episode so far the least across the 2 seasons and specials Ncuti Gatwa’s doctor has appeared in.

There were certainly things to be found interesting, but overall the episode felt lack luster. The whole episode the Doctor was just along for the ride, a drone, effectively brainwashed with the rest of reality up until the Rani finally executed the part of her plan that relied upon the Doctor thinking, and more specifically doubting.

There was plenty of cool history, callbacks to established lore, new and old: and yet, still, this felt like a lackluster episode. This ended on a cliffhanger but only in the sense that we need a next episode to have anything happen, to make any of it worthwhile. As much as I love Doctor Who, I honestly think anyone who hasn’t watched the episode yet should just wait until the next part is out. With how good most of the rest of his time in the role has been I’m fairly certain it will be a good story overall, but right now I’m just disappointed.

It feels bad doing this being a show I love so much, but I can’t really justify giving more than 4 stars. I sincerely hope they do a good job on the followup, especially since the big reveal, the return of one of the Doctor’s oldest and most powerful foes will likely lead to a grand spectacle, or an even bigger let down.

  1. My take on it was a bit different. I loved the episode. I get the criticism that the Doctor was phoning it in. But that was the task. I really enjoyed this one. I’ve been wanting the Rani to come back ever since they did Missy. I liked her, but felt the Master has been overused in the new era and there is a perfectly good evil Time Lady just waiting in the wings to come back.

My gripes about this are very different. I feel like bi-generation has now become a stupid cliche. I was on the fence about it with Tennant. But it played out in a fun interesting way. Except the part where 14 got a happy ending. He practically bi-generated once before as 10 when he went to a side dimension for a happy ending with Rose.

And the biggest problem with this episode is actually David Tennants fault! He is living in London in modern day. And I said it was going to be a problem when they did it. Why? Because what was his lazy butt doing when the Rani concocted this scheme? Sitting in the garden with Donna having tea saying “The new guy will deal it”

You can’t have a Doctor sitting around and not do something. I hope Tennant comes back in the season finale and they kill him off to prevent these sort of problematic moments from happening again.
