Thrash is a new survival horror flick only available on Netflix. The basic premise is that a hurricane that should make meteorologists consider adding category 6 (yes, that’s in the movie) has struck the East coast. The hurricane strikes, causing flooding and storm damage, and sweeping in bull sharks.
Like many survival movies, there isn’t really a distinct plot here. However, the subplots are also subpar. There are three subplots: a pregnant woman on the verge of giving birth is trapped in a car by branches, an agoraphobic woman is trapped in her mother’s house by her grief, and three adolescent foster children are trapped in their foster parents’ house by the sharks.
First of all, the set ups of the pregnant woman and the agoraphobic woman are both very trite, and using the pregnant woman to lure the agoraphobic one out of the house wasn’t particularly clever. At least their subplots tied together, though. The foster kids’ story was unique and compelling, but completely disconnected from the rest of the film except the sharks.
I do think there was an opportunity for a compelling film if it had just been about the foster kids and their doomsday prepper foster parents. Unfortunately, that’s not what the creators did.
Instead, we have two and a half completely separate storylines, one of which isn’t even resolved at the end of the movie, and plot holes so big you could drive a truck full of meat through them.
