Into the Midnight Wood

Rating: 7 out of 10.

Into the Midnight Wood by Alexandra McCollum, which came out earlier this year in January, takes place on an alternate Earth during modern day where magic, witches, werewolves, fae, etc., all exist as part of the natural order of things. In this book we follow David as he navigates living beside a magical forest filled with danger, where it’s always midnight, as well as living with a chaotic, whimsy filled/driven roommate (Meredith), a revolving third roommate who often leaves as a result of Meredith hooking up with them and their getting romantically attached while it’s just a fling for Meredith. The main premise of this book is ultimately just as a slice-of-life style story while David presents you the reader with a list of everything he dislikes about Meredith. It may seem mean spirited at first, but within the first couple pages I felt with the things he’s mentioning that he’s in love with Meredith and just doesn’t know it yet. Whether or not that’s true, and if David comes to the same conclusion by the end of the book or not, I’ll leave to you to find out.

As I read this I found that I really identified with a lot of who David is, and how he acts and presents himself, which may well have contributed to my enjoyment of this story. This was a quick enjoyable read, 7 stars.
