Life After Beth

Rating: 7 out of 10.

Having watched a lot of really bad movies lately, it is funny to then watch something with good actors in it. I don’t usually point out actors, but this movie quickly introduced us to John C. Reilly. And then Paul Reiser. And a very different looking Matthew Gray Gubler!

But this is actually getting ahead of myself a bit. This is a zombie movie, but also a comedy. In some ways reminiscent of Shaun of the Dead. But this is slower paced.

It starts with a funeral. Beth was bitten by a snake and died. Her boyfriend Zach is the main protagonist of the story. He is devastated by the situation and not coping well. Luckily her family is incredibly supportive and practically adopt him on the evening of the wake.

Which then is difficult for him when the next day they not only refuse to talk to him, but call security when he shows up at their house.

Because they have secret. Beth is back from the dead. And the grieving family decides that hiding her is the best plan. To simply keep her hidden so nobody knows she is back. Zach gets down with the plan. Sorta. Although he doesn’t stay on the plan for long. His girlfriend is somehow not dead, and he just wants to go do things with her.

But Beth coming back is just part of the bigger picture. Because she is a zombie. And this is the start of the apocalypse.

As apocalypses go though, this one is pretty low key. They aren’t fast zombies. Or slow zombies. Or rage zombies. They are slow jazz loving attic dwelling zombies. And these zombies are fully intelligent and speak. So not the typical zombie movie. Ok, maybe not fully intelligent. Beth keeps talking about how she is worried about a school test coming up even though it is summer. She is really strong though, so whatever happens to bodies making them zombies turns them into like superman. In a scene where Beth is run over by a car, she winds up with the rear tire and the weight of the car sitting on her chest. And her response is just a casual and frustrated sort of “get it off me. Why is it on top of me.”

I know this came out awhile ago. And I have no clue how I managed to miss this when it came out back in 2013. I was running a paper route at the time, so that made going to movies tough. Although I was also running my old site Horror-Web, and I always tried to keep up on the new stuff that came out. Weird that I missed it. But sometimes things happen.

This is absolutely not an over the top horror movie. It isn’t scary by any means. There is blood, but it isn’t really gory. There are zombies, but not much people eating. Really the zombies just want to go hang out in attics.

This isn’t the type of horror movie you watch when you are wanting an intense experience. It’s more like watching an episode of Golden Girls or Friends. An enjoyable experience that you won’t regret engaging in, and you might chat someone up at the water cooler the next day at work. But it won’t change your life (unless seeing Matthew Gubler wearing a towel is a life changing  moment for you.) As light hearted horror movies go, I’m going to put this one down as a 7.
