The premise here is pretty simple. Three ghost hunter types are brought together to investigate a house that appears to be haunted at the behest of an insurance company. The company is basically wanting a “clean bill” declaring the house isn’t haunted. Holly is the psychic of the bunch, brought in for her paranormal abilities. Scott is the skeptic who believes science can explain everything. Liam is the tech gadget nerd with the camera set ups and all the good gear.
Things seem pretty light and blah at the start, but while they are sleeping something happens. At 3 AM. Something that always seems odd to me. Why is it that supernatural stuff always happens at 3 AM? Doesn’t matter what time zone you are in, it is still at 3. And what happens with Daylight Savings here in America? Do ghosts just inherently know what time it is at all times? But that is a minor thing with regard to this movie in particular. Essentially Holly sees a ghost but the others do not. This 3 AM visit is a regular occurrence and it escalates as the entity becomes overly aggressive with Holly.
She wants to leave, but agrees to stay because this is actually what they are here for. What they agreed to. There is a bit of a dispute between them as Holly considers doing paranormal type things to try and get the ghost out. Scott argues that science should be used as all things are energy and with the right frequency the ghost could actually be simply dispersed.
There is a great line from Liam at one point where he is just like “Hold up. I’m the tech guy. I don’t want to risk my life for this.” There was some push back from Scott on the idea of leaving, but Liam was like “My truck. If I leave, you leave.” Which I loved as an idea.
SPOILER area.
Hopefully that is enough warning. Because I am going to super spoiler here in the next few sentences. If you have been reading my reviews, you know that lately I have been wanting an unhappy ending. And here we get it! Yay! Just like in Red Dwarf “Everybody’s dead Dave.”
At one point police are brought in because they do find a body in a basement area behind a walled off room. But what they didn’t realize was that the ghost they got rid of was trying to protect them from the real horror in the basement. With the ghost gone, they released the true threat. It attacked when the police were there. Killing them brutally. And then dealt with the main characters. Leaving absolutely nobody alive as the real horror is now unleashed on the world.
Hopefully this sates my need for an unhappy ending and I can get back to enjoying movies normally!
Overall I enjoyed this movie quite a bit. I’m inclined to put it into the 8 star rating. But everyone dying absolutely gives it an extra star!
