The opening act of this movie is quiet. And I mean very dialogue light. We are following the main character, Lourdes, who has an intense job at a restaurant. She seemingly never has free time, working throughout the day in the kitchen, staying late after hours to clean the place, and getting things ready before opening in the morning. She lives in an apartment above the restaurant, making it easy to move between work and home. But the opening scene actually shows her lying dead in the entry of the restaurant. Dead.
What happened? How can the heroine of our story already be dead before we have even met her? Fear not, all will be explained as the movie unfolds. After the cops arrive and start trying to figure out what happened, the story jumps back in time. We see Lourdes working and being harassed by the woman who is sleeping with the boss. But none of that really matters to her. She just wants to work and earn money to send back to her mother who is looking after her sick son.
But something creepy is there. Lurking. Watching her. A supernatural entity that appears to have nefarious intentions towards her. The movie builds slowly as she does her best to ignore everything. She doesn’t want to engage with anyone, but inevitably she is forced to. At one point, a patron follows after her as she heads to the bathroom, forcing his way inside with her. He offers her money for sex, and we can tell she very much doesn’t want anything to do with him, but eventually he peels off a substantial amount of money and she relents. Her primary goal is getting money to send to her mother to care for her son.
There are some stories that need to be left unspoiled. This is one of those. The nature of the entity is worth the idea of it not being spoiled. Devoured is an entertaining story that kept me intrigued enough that I wanted to know more. I don’t find myself questioning the idea of rating this an 8. It is a solid 8, and might even be encroaching on 9 territory. I do look forward to rewatching it.
