In the second episode here, we are greeted with a new killer. One who targets Uber drivers. Well, it’s not called Uber, it’s called YourCar. An intriguing plot idea. The killer simply approaches vehicles in a busy area where pickups are prevalent. But having lived in small towns near St. Louis for the last 25ish years, it is a plot point that doesn’t resonate with me. Not that it has to. I imagine a lot of people have been in and around areas where they have seen this. And it doesn’t bother me, but it does make me (as a writer) look at things a bit side eyed.
Dexter breaks into the hotel where Harrison works and puts his own eyes on the crime scene. There is an unusual amount of laxness to security around the hotel just in general. Especially after a murder happened there. Dexter just sidles his way into the hotel through a convenient back alley doorway as two employees leave. And when seen by housekeeping, he is pretty much ignored. He makes his way to the room where the murder happened without incident. Manages to hide as detectives enter and discuss the case. Backtracks his way down into the kitchen where he is also allowed to wander unchecked. Dexter sees in the kitchen the perfect potential kill room, and suspects this is where Harrison did the deed. He is allowed to sit in the bar and simply wait out the kitchen staff all leaving. But what seems odd about all this is that there doesn’t seem to be any concern about security cameras. Is this sloppy writing, or will we get a moment later in the show where a cop is wondering who the dude is caught on camera going into the crime scene. And why is he all over the place?
Harrison seems to be having a really hard time in the aftermath of his inaugural kill. Seeing the victim when he closes his eyes. Having nightmares tied to shooting his dad. Trying to distract himself in any way he can.
There’s a wild story developing that involves a network of serial killers and an organization that is funding them. Setting up a potential season long storyline. Something Dexter loved in the original series. Although just a few episodes in, I’m thinking it might be bigger than just a single season. But we won’t know that for 8 more episodes!
Dexter feels comfortable again. This feels like the original series did. Dexter finding out about the YourCar killer (nicknamed the Dark Passenger) has given him a goal. He already had one with making sure Harrison was ok. But that is an uncomfortable goal for him. He still has the whole “How am I supposed to do the dad thing” going on. But trying to track the Dark Passenger is the sort of thing he knows how to do. And after spending so long as Jim Lindsey, he needs to find his way back to Dexter Morgan. I think that is going to be a big part of this season. Something I look forward to seeing play out.
While I love the feel of this, and it is Dexter, so it always has a place in my heart, I’m thinking it is going to get a little star knockery on my end. Going with 8 stars on it.
Although in picking pictures for this, I was reminded of a moment. I do love that they have a moment of major weakness for Dexter related to his being shot. As he approaches a subway car, he is bumped in just the wrong spot and practically falls down from the minor contact.
