My first exposure to this series was when a comic came out called Nailbiter Returns. I was intrigued at this comic about a serial killer. The title having Returns in it confused me. Then I found out it was exactly what it said it was. That came out in 2020. Last weekend I acquired Nailbiter 1-30. The full series prior to Returns. Going to read and review them here in pseudo story arcs.
Edward “Nailbiter” Warren is a serial killer. Caught red handed, but managed to get acquitted by a jury. He has returned to the small town of Buckaroo, Oregon. Where he was born. A town that has the notorious distinction of having given “birth” to 16 serial killers.
The story starts with Finch being called to Buckaroo by a colleague who claims to have figured out the mystery. When he arrives though, his friend is missing but he becomes aligned with the sheriff Shannon Crane. Upon his arrival, people start dying. And naturally everyone starts thinking it has to do with Nailbiter.
But there’s more going on here. Finch and Crane are with Warren during an incident. Giving him an ironclad alibi and causing them to be in an unwitting position of needing to protect him.
As bodies pile up and the mystery of it all grows, we find a young girl named Alice that is behind the scenes somehow trying to figure it all out. But that is the closing of this arc.
With art by Mike Henderson (who has done a fair amount of work with Marvel) and written by Joshua Williamson (who has done a lot of DC comics) this series has been very engaging. I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if I read through most of it over the next few days.
As a writer, this makes me want to work on the serial killer story I have had rattling around in my brain for the last ten years!
The first story arc(ish) here I’m going to give an 8 star review to. I would be surprised if anyone read these 5 issues and wasn’t driven to get the rest and read it all the way through.
