Dr Who Special 5: Joy to the World

Rating: 10 out of 10.

Joy to the world! The Doctor Who Christmas special is here! Sorry, couldn’t resist. In this Christmas special Ncuti Gatwa’s doctor finds himself in a time hotel set to Christmas day all throughout time. Each room a different time and place, though currently all Christmas.

In typical Christmas fashion the Doctor uncovers a Christmas plot which would be ruinous for mankind and sets himself on fixing it. This is one of Gatwa’s best episodes yet and I’m very glad I didn’t dawdle in getting around to watching it. As should be expected when you have a nexus to other times, the Doctor does end up overlapping to help himself out with a much needed code, and when asked where he got the code from he answers in a frustrating yet brilliant way, “I heard myself say it a year ago and I remembered it… Basically the code came from nowhere. But then so did the universe and no one complains about that.”

I’m honestly a little annoyed at how OK I am with that explanation. How can something be so lazy yet fit so perfectly? The Doctor spent quite a lot of one on one time with a new character Anita, who towards the end of the episode I was really hoping would be set up as the next companion though I think one of the very last scene somewhat precludes her unless they were to have a time jump, which, Doctor Who, time travel, very possible though I think unlikely.

10 Stars from me, go watch it if you haven’t already.
