A-Z November Horrors: U

Starting with a movie that I’m not doing. Why would that be?

Because I am not at home and don’t have access to my DVDs. And Unrest isn’t streaming on any platforms I have. I like this movie, but don’t feel confident to go over it as it has been too long since I last watched it. But it’s good. And I recommend watching it.

Finding a movie that starts with U and is a good horror movie is a challenge. I didn’t want to go with Underworld though. Too easy and mixed quality. Plus you likely know it.

I wasn’t familiar with Underwater. I found it very engaging though. An extensive and large deep sea mining base is struck with a catastrophe. Deep sea pressures though are unforgiving. Once a problem sets in, the station begins to collapse. Quick decisions have to be made. A door has to be closed sealing off a tunnel while survivors are trying to reach that door. Escape pods are no longer an option as many are cut off from the areas that are accessible. The small group of would be survivors decide the only option is to get into pressurized suits, head for the sea floor, and walk to the nearby station. A plan that isn’t good.

A plan that gets worse when the nature of the catastrophe begins to be understood. A Lovecraftian type of creature about the size of a large cat is found near a worker that escaped but failed to survive. That creature though wasn’t the problem. A very large man sized creature begins stalking the group. But it isn’t just one. There are many of them.

But those are just the minor creatures. Because there is a Cthulhu type one as well.

For me the tension of this was very palpable. It wasn’t a typical American jump scare movie, but there were a few of those. It was more of a gripping “can any of them survive” type of story. A few predictable moments in it. When the six first don the deep sea suits, it was obvious one of the helmets would crack. Spectacularly so! In a gruesome way. And having a group of six (well, five) gave room to have monsters pick them off.

For me, this was a Thanksgiving day surprise. I actually want to watch it again soon without as much going on. (On an unrelated note, I wouldn’t be surprised to hear that at one point this movie had Cloverfield connections. As I have warmed to that property, that would have been cool.)

I have seen this movie multiple times. And while I haven’t read the source material or seen the series, I have enjoyed this immensely.

Even if I don’t know what is going on.

I know there are spirals. And that’s the main thing. Very surreal. A movie that leaves details and reasons unexplained. And I think they did so in large part because they were inexplicable. We all know I am a big fan of inexplicable and peculiar. And that is right up my alley.

And thinking about writing this, I am a bit torn. Because there isn’t a whole lot of room to dig into things. I mean there is, it is like a 90+ minute movie. But the crux of it all is that the spirals are wreaking havoc within the small town at the center of the movie. And the people affected tend to have bad things happen to them. Those around the bad things don’t really seem to notice or care too much. It’s like their reality has taken a turn and they are just running with it.
