A-Z November Horrors: T

Getting closer as each letter goes by. T seems really close to the end of the alphabet. And yet there are still more. When does it end?

Easily my favorite T movie. It gels quite well with the general brain status I have of loving movies that mess with the mind.

Jessica is heading to the docks in order to go on a sailing excursion with a friend. And several other friends accompany them for the day trip. Shortly after getting out into the ocean, a storm arrives at the same time as the wind dying completely and stranding them. They try their best to batten down for the storm, but to no avail. The storm capsizes the sail boat. Not everyone survives that moment. Suddenly a steam ship arrives and they manage to get on board.

And then things get weird. Because the ship is abandoned. Sorta. But the revelation of who else is on board is very surprising. I don’t want to get into specifics, because this is a movie I think you should watch. And telling you about it takes away the first view fun. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve seen this movie about a dozen times and it doesn’t lose any intensity. I literally just watched it the other day, and kinda want to slap the DVD back in right now. But I’m watching the Tick (Patrick Warburton series) right now, and I can’t think of any show that would make me want to stop this!

Is it weird that the first thing I think of with this movie is the theme song? I’m including the video of the theme song here because it’s awesome.

Tomie is more than just a theme song though. It’s the story of a girl who keeps coming back, but there is a lot of death always surrounding her. At the start, she is just a head in a bag. But death isn’t the handicap it used to be. At least not for Tomie. The story proper kicks off with a young girl dealing with a therapist and some prior trauma in her life. The mystery of that trauma is something that unfolds throughout the story. An additional mystery unfolds as a detective is looking into the mystery of who Tomie is and why death surrounds her.

Could these be connected? Of course they are. And as bodies start to fall, we find out that Tomie is back. And the main character who was in therapy was friends with her. The “trauma” in her life had to do with events surrounding Tomie becoming a head in a bag (did you forget the part about the head in the bag from last paragraph?) And I say she’s back, but the way she is back was interesting. She went from head to child to teen(ish) within a matter of 95 minutes (that’s the movie runtime.) And then things begin happening. People start dying, because that’s the influence of Tomie. And when people start dying it gets messy.

This is based on a Junji Ito manga. Perhaps best known for Uzumaki, but that would be spoiling tomorrow, so don’t pay attention to me having just mentioned it.

And now for something completely theme songy…
