I imagine I will get some hate for this review. And I get it. The idea of following Jason Voorhees through a Friday the 13th movie is intriguing. And that is what this is…
Using the video game perspective of a second person POV (ok, not unique to video games, but often seen there), we follow “Johnny” as he resurrects and then proceeds to stalk and kill, well anyone. For the majority of the movie, that’s how it is filmed. Every now and then deviating and making it actually a bit confusing. For story purposes, I realize it makes it easier. But the problem is, there is no story here.
We don’t have an unreliable narrator, we have an uninteresting one. Because Jason himself isn’t interesting. He isn’t Freddy. Sorry, Johnny.
I honestly don’t know how deep I can go into it. Normally I enjoy getting the opportunity to tear into a movie or book. But this is so absolutely blah that there’s nothing to discuss. It’s just the kills from a Friday the 131th movie.
There was a movie made almost 20 years ago that did this. Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon. A fantastic movie with a charismatic lead seeking to become the next “Jason.” I think I’m going to do a review of it for the site in October.
I’m giving this 1 star. I started at 2, but my inability to come up with words cost it a star. I am strongly debating the idea of a Black Star. I can’t quite get there though, because it was an interesting idea. But the drunken idea session where it was conceived had to be followed by a sober morning actually evaluating it.
