The main character in this Hulu original movie is Brynn. In some ways she is the only character in this movie. And be prepared to watch this movie closely. I made the mistake the first time I watched it of doing something else at the same time and effectively missed the movie. Why? Because there are only a total of 5 words said in the entire movie.
I’m going to lay a terrible burden on this at the start here and explain it as I go. This movie is very derivative. Of the Visitor episode from classic Twilight Zone with Agnes Moorehead and also Invasion of the Body Snatchers with sprinklings of Signs, X-Files, and E.T. This is a heavy spoiler laden review as I lay out the whole story.
The movie starts with a typical day in the life of Brynn, which involves nobody dealing with her. To which she seems both bothered and ok with. She wants interaction but has resigned herself to the life of solitude that has been thrust upon her. At the end of the day she is subjected to an alien incursion. The intruder that invades her home is like the size of E.T. but the stereotypical Grey like we saw in X-Files. Just like Agnes Moorehead in the Twilight Zone episode, we watch as Brynn alternates between being terrified of what is happening and taking action. Ultimately she accidently kills off the intruder. Her home is much worse for the incident. As morning comes she decides to head to town to warn people(?) Reluctantly she enters the police station but turns tail when she sees the police chief and his wife. (Some of this is a bit confusing as it hasn’t been explained and our main character doesn’t talk.)
She decides to take a bus out of town, but is quickly accosted by a couple passengers who have been taken over by an alien parasite (visible in the throat.) It is unclear if all the passengers are aliens and only two attack her, because if not then why are all the other people totally unphased by the odd actions of the two. Are the two attacking her because she is the only human on the bus? Or do they somehow sense that she killed one of their parents (for lack of a better word.) Escaping the bus she returns home.
And the night brings another threat into her home. Including a really big Grey that accidently gets stuck in a car letting her kill it. Another thought I had while watching it was that she kind of Jar Jar Binks’ her way through these encounters. Fumbling and bumbling her way to a positive outcome. When a ship then tries to beam her up (also very X-Files in visuals) she returns to the familiarity of her home even if it is no longer the safe haven it once was.
Finally an alien captures her with their superior technology and injects a parasite in her. During this we finally understand her life and circumstances. As a child she got into a fight with her best friend Maude, daughter of the police chief, and sort of accidently killed her. Which is why the entire town holds her in such contempt. To me it is unclear if the aliens then take pity on her, or if she simply overcomes the parasite. And the movie ends with a large number of visible alien ships beaming up presumably infected people and leaving.
Okay. So this was a much more detailed recap than I intended. But it feels like you need to know this to understand it. Still not certain I understand it myself honestly. But I did enjoy it. I like that it forced me to focus on what was happening. Too often in life today we are all constantly dividing our focus on multiple things. Part of why I enjoy subtitled movies and shows is the forced focus.
What happens in the aftermath of these events is unclear. Maybe society collapses. Maybe it is reborn with a new closeness as we have an external threat to unite us. Maybe it is just Tuesday and nothing changes even though so much has changed (we are humanity after all.)
I very much recommend this movie. It may not be great, but it was well done and intriguing. It had me interested enough to rewatch it in order to do this review. I waver between 6 and 7 stars for the review. Ultimately I land with 7 star review here because it did keep me intrigued even with it’s flaws.
