Railroad Ink is a Roll and Write game. But it isn’t just one game, there are four different ones. Blue, Red, Green, and Yellow. Each of these core games comes with 4 basic white dice and two different sets of 2 dice in the color of the set. In the picture above you can see the two shades of yellow dice still in the box. The expansions in Yellow are Canyons (the darker pair) and Cactus (the lighter pair.) The base cost was $20 for a core set. With each one having different expansion content and there being an additional 7 mini expansions just consisting of two pair of new dice. That is a whole lot of content and variability to be had.
The game plays over 7 rounds during which each player is duplicating the 4 dice onto their player board. Using an expansion means only playing 6 rounds and you must use all white dice and may use as many of the expansion dice as you wish.
I love these type of games. There is a spatial puzzle inherent in each game. And an additional way to draft to play. I haven’t played the draft style yet, but really look forward to it.
This is a fantastic way to design a game with expansion content. Get as much or as little as you wish. I’m leaning towards wanting to get all of it now. It plays up to four, but there is a way to play solo which I have done a little of. Thinking about it,, it would be so cool to have it all and play solo through all the content. There’s even a Cthulhu expansion!
I give this game 8 stars. The amount of game you get for a minimal investment is fantastic. If I had the complete set it might impact the value per play, but I’m willing to take that chance.
